Climate & Weather[]

Trabzon has a typical Black Sea climate with high and evenly distributed rainfall the year round. Summers are warm and humid, and the average maximum temperature is around 27 °C (81 °F) in August. Winters are cool and damp, and the lowest average minimum temperature is around 5 °C (41 °F) in January.Precipitation is heaviest in autumn and spring. Snowfall is quite common between the months of December and March, snowing for a week or two, and it can be heavy once it snows.

When southerly winds prevail expect moderate turbulence, tailwind on approach and windshear below 1000ft because of orographic turbulence and mountain wave activity. In Winter winds crossing the mountain range from the south can also cause Foehn conditions with temperatures reaching 20 °C.

What to expect[]

Approach[]

  • If approaching via TEMEL from the west, expect 10,000ft at TEMEL - this might make additional drag necessary afterwards to cope with the steep descent.
  • Approaching Trabzon from the Black Sea expect FL180 at HAMSI - Trabzon will not be able to clear you below the MEA.
  • Note that the speed restriction at CG001 only applies to the holding.
    LTCG LOC
  • Beware of false glide slope captures before reaching 9 NM from TBN, it is therefore recommended to stay in LNAV until reaching the FAP.
  • Winds change rapidly on final approach, especially when the winds are southerly - together with the 3.3° glide path this can make early configuration necessary.
  • If the current winds necessitate an approach to runway 29 flying the localizer for runway 11 is the safest way to start the circling.
  • Note that an instrument approach to runway 29 is not possible in any case, neither VOR 1,2 or 3 are authorized for straight-in approach! Any of these make it mandatory to first overfly TZX VOR, also circling after these letdowns requires 5km visibility instead of the 2.4km required for circling from the ILS approach.
  • When turning to final aim past the peninsula east of the runway and only align with the runway centerline on short final to avoid receiving EGPWS warnings when overflying the peninsula at low height.
  • Proximity to the sea shore means that the airfield is extremely popular with sea birds.
    Birdstrike

The result of a violent encounter with the local fauna

Taxi[]

  • Taxiway E is not lighted, expect pickup by a follow me.
  • The drainage ditch between the apron and taxiway C has been filled in, nevertheless the taxi lines remain the same.

Departure[]

  • While the tower usually will not announce the runway for takeoff until after pushback you can nevertheless request a runway and ask if any inbound traffic is expected at your estimated departure time.
  • SIDs are usually flown as published, tower may also assign a radial to be intercepted after departure if there is conflicting inbound traffic.

Facilities[]

  • THY maintenance available (B737, A320)
